CONSTITUTION OF THE GUSTAVUS BIOCHEMISTRY CLUB

ARTICLE I: Purpose

The purpose of the Gustavus Biochemistry Club is to provide an environment that fosters discussion of topics related to biochemistry and molecular biology.

ARTICLE II: Membership

Section 1: Membership in this organization is open to all students, faculty, staff, and

other members of the Gustavus community who share an interest in topics

related to biochemistry and molecular biology.

Section2: Members are accepted on a continuing basis throughout the academic year.

Section 3: Members are required to attend at least 3 club meetings each semester.

Section 4: Guests and Associate members of the club (those not yet having attended the

required 3 meetings the previous semester) may not be subject to any benefits

of the club budget, but are encouraged to attend club functions.

ARTICLE III: Officers

Section 1: The following officer positions shall exist in the Gustavus Biochemistry Club: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. All officers must be full-time Gustavus students in good standing with the college. The office of the President has the additional requirement of having been a member of the organization for at least one full academic year before holding the office of the President. If no qualified candidates are interested, this requirement may be waived with a majority agreement of the present membership.

Section 2: The duties of each office are described as follows:

A. President

1. To organize and preside over meetings

2. To function as a spokesperson for the organization

B. Vice-President

1. To preside over meetings in the absence of the President

2. To exercise all the functions of the Office of the President in the absence of the President

3. To organize the end of the academic year banquet

C. Secretary

1. To keep a written record of happenings at meetings

2. To submit meetings to the membership via the club email alias

3. To take attendance at bi-monthly meetings

D. Treasurer

1. To maintain the finances of the Biochemistry Club and keep accurate records of all financial matters.

2. To present a monthly report of the status of club finances to the membership

Section 3: Candidates for office must be nominated from the existing membership of the

Biochemistry Club. All members present on the day of voting and those who

have attended at least one meeting that semester prior to the night of voting, will

be eligible to vote. Voting will take place with paper ballots. Candidates will be

elected in to office with a majority vote.

Section 4: The term of office will be for one academic year. Members, though not club

officers, may classified as inactive for semester(s) spent on study abroad.

Section 5: The club, by a two-thirds vote of all members present, may remove on just cause,

an officer. In the event of a tie, the decision to remove an officer from duty will

be finalized by the club’s faculty advisor. A request for removal of an officer will

be brought to either the club President, or the Vice-President if the request for removal involves the occupant of the Office of the President. This request will then be brought before the membership at the next scheduled meeting.

Section 6: If an officer is removed from office, the position will be filled following anelection by the general membership pool.

ARTICLE IV: Meetings

Section 1: Meetings will be held a minimum of twice each month during the academic year,

with the exception being the month of December. The secretary will be

responsible for informing members of the meetings. The president will set the

agenda for the meetings with input from all members.

Section 2: Decisions are to be made through a vote after being brought to the floor by a

motion followed by a second. Only a majority shall allow the vote to pass.

Section 3: Each member of the club has the capability to call special meetings for reasons

that are believed to require attention before the next regularly scheduled meeting.

Members must be given 3 days notice of any special meetings.

Section 4: Attendance during January-term will not be subject to the stated attendance policy

ARTICLE V: Finances

Section 1: Upon dissolution of the club, any financial assets will be credited to the Gustavus

Student Senate.

ARTICLE VI: Club By-Laws

Section 1: By-laws may be established by club members and reviewed each September.

Any member in good standing can propose a by-law.

Section 2: All members in good standing are eligible to vote, but MUST be present at the

meeting to do so. A majority vote is needed to allow the by-law to pass.

ARTICLE VII: Club Constitutional Amendments

Section 1: All members of the Gustavus Biochemistry Club who are in good standing may

propose amendments to the Constitution.

Section 2: All members in good standing will be eligible to vote, but must be present at the

meeting to do so. A two-thirds majority vote is needed in order for a by-law to pass.

Section 3: If amendments are passed, they will take effect at the end of the meeting during

which they were passed, unless otherwise stated by the club.
