I am Anthony Cesnik, Chem Major, Scandinavian Studies Minor, hailing from Rice Lake, WI. My main instruments are the oboe and the bass. I am also the co-president of the Musical B.A.R.! I have been musically active since I was eight. I started playing violin then switched to cello in about a month. I took cello lessons and played in a Duluth Youth Orchestra then in an Eau Claire Youth Orchestra. There was no outlet for cello in Rice Lake, WI, where we would be moving soon, so I picked up the oboe in 8th grade before moving. I have been playing the oboe ever since and loving it. In my freshman year of high school, I was intending to play trumpet, which I played for marching and pep band, in a jazz band, but Mr. Hurst, the band director, had heard that I played the cello in the past. He refused to let me play anything other than the upright bass, so I reluctantly started playing. I went to a small jazz combo camp just after starting up the summer before my sophomore year of high school, but I am a largely self-taught bassist. When it comes to bass, I definitely prefer to play upright, but I have been improving and getting to know the electric, also. That initial reluctance has definitely faded! I play in the orchestra, a jazz combo, and a bluegrass band. I also play many gigs that pop up for bass or oboe or just play in the hallways of campus center - tons of fun, you should try it. The Musical B.A.R. is a community for those who are excited about music, who want to experience music, who want to talk about music, who want Gustie music to be heard around campus and in the larger community, and who want to take part - who want fellowship in music at Gustavus. I want the Musical B.A.R. to be a place that expands my musical horizons, and is multifaceted, creative, and a fun, exciting, and engaging place for any musician. |
